Dungeon maps with the walls already in
A dungeon picture in Foundry or Roll20 is just paint until someone traces every wall and door by hand. Mapsmith draws the dungeon and saves it as a Universal VTT file (.dd2vtt): the walls block sight, the doors open and close, the barred gates can be seen through, and the lights are already placed.
A crypt as a virtual tabletop reads it: walls in red, doors in blue, lights in yellow.
Three kinds of dungeon
- Crypts: family vaults under the ground, with tombs, coffins and an embalming room.
- Fallen keeps: buildings in a walled yard, a tower on each corner and a barred gate.
- Old mines: drifts, pillar galleries, a flooded sump and the lode at the far end.
Each comes as a lair (4 to 6 rooms), a dungeon (8 to 10) or a deep one (13 to 16, with stairs further down). Every room is numbered, furnished and has a line on what’s there; some hold a hazard or treasure, and the far room always has treasure. Above the map is the dungeon’s story with a hook. Doors come plain, as open arches, as barred gates, and now and then secret. The same seed always draws the same dungeon.
Into your virtual tabletop
- Foundry VTT: the Universal Battlemap Importer module reads the
.dd2vttas a scene with its walls, doors and lights. - Roll20: import the
.dd2vttand the walls, doors and lights come in on the dynamic lighting layer. - Owlbear Rodeo: the Scene Importer extension with Dynamic Fog. Step by step.
The saved map is the players’ map: no room numbers, and secret doors drawn as plain wall until they find them. Free, any map saves as a PNG named with its size in squares, so Owlbear Rodeo sets the grid itself.
Once, not every month
Other generators put wall export behind a subscription: Dungeon Scrawl’s UVTT export is for Pro subscribers at $5 a month, and Dungeon Flow’s Foundry export with walls is in its $5 a month Pro (both checked 2 Nov 2026). Mapsmith Pro is $6 once, and the same key saves towns, regions, ships and building floor plans too.
Play it alone
Press Explore and only the way in shows. Click the question mark at a door to go through, and the room appears with what you found: nothing, a sign of what’s ahead, a trap, or something waiting. Search a room for secret doors on a 5 or 6. A room always rolls the same thing, so it’s still there when you come back.
Where it runs
In your browser, free, with nothing to install, and on itch. If you keep your campaign in Obsidian, Mapsmith is a free plugin there (Community plugins, search Mapsmith), and the dungeon sits in your note with a note for every room. One Pro key works in both.
Mapsmith is free and open source (MIT); Pro adds the VTT save. Made by Bananafest Destiny. The code was written with AI, and the textures under the maps (stone, rock, wood) were made with an image generator; the maps themselves are drawn by code. Foundry VTT, Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Dungeon Scrawl, Dungeon Flow and Obsidian are their owners’ trademarks, named only to say what Mapsmith works with or how it compares.
