Fantasy maps in Foundry, with the walls in
A .dd2vtt (Universal VTT) file is a map picture with its walls, doors, windows and lights written beside it. Foundry doesn’t open one by itself; a free module does, and the scene comes out with line of sight already working. These steps are for Foundry v14, and the module is verified on it.
Once: install the importer
- On Foundry’s setup screen, open Add-on Modules, press Install Module and search for Universal Battlemap Importer (by Moo Man). Install it.
- Launch your world, open Game Settings → Manage Modules, tick Universal Battlemap Importer and save.
Each map
- Open the Scenes tab in the sidebar and press Universal Battlemap Import.
- Give the scene a name, pick your
.dd2vttfile, and choose a folder in your User Data for the picture to be saved to. If you don’t use S3, leave the storage on User Data and ignore the S3 fields. - Leave fidelity and offset as they are for a first try; they only change how many walls a curved cave edge gets and how far walls sit from the edge. Import.
- Open the new scene. Drop a token in and turn on token vision: walls block sight, doors open from the door icon, and the lights are lit.
Don’t have a .dd2vtt to try?
Mapsmith draws towns, dungeons, ships and building plans from a seed, free in your browser. Here’s a crypt. With Mapsmith Pro ($6 once), Save for virtual tabletop under any map writes the .dd2vtt these steps import, with every wall, door, window and light placed. Without Pro, in the browser the same button shows you what the file would carry, drawn over the map.
Prefer no generated art in your scenes? Press Painted under the map to make it Plain: the map is inked by code alone, and the file saves the same.
Only a picture?
Free, Mapsmith saves any map as a PNG named with its size in squares (like The Penlow Crypt-36x39.png). In Foundry, make a scene with that picture as its background and set the grid so that many squares fit; the walls you’d then trace by hand. Using Owlbear Rodeo instead? The same file in Owlbear.
Universal Battlemap Importer is a free module by Moo Man, not ours; the steps follow its README, read 2 Nov 2026. Mapsmith is free and open source (MIT); Pro adds the VTT save. Made by Bananafest Destiny. The code was written with AI, and the painted textures were made with an image generator; the maps are drawn by code, and the Plain look uses no textures. Foundry VTT and Owlbear Rodeo are their owners’ trademarks, named only to say what Mapsmith works with.
